I remember visiting the Atherton Tablelands when I was little girl, staying at the Yungaburra Pub and visiting Lake Barrine. I recall it being a quiet, laidback and peaceful place, but little did I know that this area is full of some of the most hardcore and thrilling MTB trails in Queensland’s Tropical North. The best part is that it also has everything in between making it the perfect place to explore at your own pace.
Here are a couple of suggestions, from an easy roll to world-class mountain biking that you can access from your base in Atherton. But before you hit up any of these tracks, fuel up with breakfast at Petals and Pinecones. Their food is as beautiful to look at as it is to eat (check out their creation jars and you’ll see what we mean!).
Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail (Family Friendly)
The total length of the old, decommissioned rail corridor dating back to 1903, is 35.2km point to point. However, the first four sections are the most commonly ridden adding up to just over 20km. The trail is suitable for all ages and abilities.
There is so much to see along the trail, so make sure you have time to take it all in. Passing through rich agricultural landscapes and parts of the Mabi Rainforest, you will also find well-interpreted Aboriginal history, extensive World War 2 history and plenty of places to stop for fresh produce and coffee. Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park
A mountain biking mecca, this park has over 70km of trails, split across 17 separate trails of varying distances and difficulty. Located in the Herberton Range State Forest, the single-track mountain bike trails pass through open eucalypt forest, river crossings and waterfalls. The majority of trails are best suited for intermediate riders, but there are options for beginners and more experienced riders that won’t disappoint. Visit here for details.
Outside the mountain bike park, there are several dirt roads and fire trails to explore to suit every level of experience, including:
- Kauri Creek – Mt. Edith Loop (distance 61kms)
- Inner Wallum Loop (distance 41kms)
- The Baldy Loop (distance 32kms)
- Lake Barrine – Tinaroo (distance 60kms)
